Ever since her father die,Gilda Joyce became interested in psychic stuff and investigation. He gave Gilda an old typewriter which Gilda treat it as her treasure and safekeeps it,using it whenever she has an inspiration to type out something. For her vacation,Gilda decided to visit her mother's cousin, which is her uncle,Lester Splinter.Lester has a daughter, whom is Juliet Splinter. They live in a Victorian Mansion, which was thought to be haunted by Aunt Melanie because she committed suicide in the tower nearby.Gilda wanted to solve the mystery as to what actually happened to Aunt Melanie because Lester and Juliet did not believe in ghosts.Gilda thinks that her career as a pyschic investigator will take off if she solve this mystery.Meanwhile,Juliet thought she saw her aunt's ghost when she was walking up the stairs at home, but the doctor dismissed it as being anemic.
When Gilda reached the Victorian Mansion in San Franciso,Juliet's attitude towards her was cold and did not think much of Gilda. But as time grows by and after several incidents they had been through, she gradually opens up to Gilda, and promised to assist Gilda in the investigation in the end. However,as they solve the mystery bit by bit, there were several misunderstandings.Firstly,Gilda suspected that Lester killed her sister, and tried to expose him by disguising herself as a mafia because Lester worked as a bank accountant. But eventually,Lester realised that the 'mafia' was Gilda and was angry but Gilda lied that she was just having fun with Juliet to tricked him, thus,he was instead happy that his daughter is finally having fun.
They finally solved the mystery when they found a music box and unlocked it.Then they hear some music which leads to Juliet unlocking the door of the tower, and inside, they found paintings by Aunt Melanie and found out she was a painter.Meanwhile,Lester was sleepwalking when he came to the tower and he awoke to hear the duo screaming as they thought he was the ghost of Aunt Melanie.Lester then told them the truth:Juliet's mother hate Melanie and thinks that Melanie is talking nonsense when she says that ghosts and fairies existed.Juliet's mother did not want Juliet to be influenced by Melanie and thus, she told Juliet that Melanie was just talking nonsense.Melanie slept in the tower and also did her paintings there. Finally,Juliet's mother could not take it anymore and told Lester to send Melanie to a Home. However,Lester had promised their mother that he will not send Melanie away. Then one day,Melanie commited suicide by jumping off the tower.Lester had to face the truth. All this years despite his efforts the memory,he had been unable to erase the fact that he failed to save his sister's life.
Finally, this mystery was solved, and at first,Lester wanted to send Gilda home, but after Juliet pleaded him not to,he relented and so Gilda stayed.Juliet discovered that she had a flair for art like her aunt, thus, she picked up art lessons.Lester realised that he should face the truth instead of escpaing from reality and thus, kept Melanie's paintings in the house. As for Gilda?Well, she was happy that this case was finally ended and this also motivated her to pursue her dream even more...
My Views:
Gilda Joyce:Pyschic Investigator is a heart warming book which touches on family relationship regardless between father and daughter or sister and brother. Its mystery also add taste to the story plot and there is also Gilda's thoughts about the mystery, typed out using her typewriter.I think that this book is worth reading because it is touching and the story plot is creative. My favourite part of the story was the ending, when the mystery was solved and Lester and Juliet learn to communicate with each other.
